Weather pleasant. Temp. 67° At 18 M. Soundings were had in 64 fms. We are now out of sight of land. A large tortoise was passed, which dove so quickly that I had but a glimpse of it. Lon 122°34' Wind light ENE S.p. 58' At daylight we made land, - the Islands of the Chinese Coast near Chu-san. A chilly influence was felt as I came on deck, and the dark yellow color of the water showed at December 1854 Pacific Ocean 203 once that we were off one of the great Chinese rivers. Our purpose was to go into Shanghai to leave our wrecked passengers, but seeing a ship near us, also bound in, which proved to be the clipper "Nishin-gake" we put them on board of her, together with some letters for home. Being thus saved the necessity of remaining long on the coast we kept off for that sea again, but the wind failing we were obliged to anchor a while with the Kedge to prevent being carried to leeward by the tide at night. 19th.
