Borin Islands
meeting him, brought him on board.
Mactres
met me at every step .... the Scriphtalme
at this point were especially numerous in
species and beautiful in coloring. A num-
ber of Iridaceae were collected, in one
of which I found a new and remarkable
Shrimp, with the habits of a Pausothere.
Crabs of the latter genus were found in the
small oysters which covered the rocks.
The afternoon was spent in fishing. The
Seine was hauled at Sunset and some large
Skates fell to my share; with Jar-fish (Bdelo) de
22nd Sunday. I took a walk on shore, following
up one of the ravines in which ran a small
stream, the tropical vegetation overhanging,
which was so dense as almost to exclude the
light. A bright green Neritina was abundant
clinging to the rocks over which the water
rushed, and a Pecarcinus occurred on the
banks at considerable elevations. At the
mouth of the stream the banks were
loved in all directions by gigantic Sea-
Armed (6 inches across) which fought cour-
ageously with two dogs which beatened
to attack them, using their powerful
claws with dexterity and success.

23rd I paid another visit to the Mountain Streams
and collected some large Shrimp and a few
gobies. Two kinds of Snipe were shot. In
the evening Mr Brooke shot from the ship
one of the large frugivorous bats (Pteropus)
which were flying about in considerable
numbers.
24th At low water I secured a great variety
of invertebrals (Astoriade, Cidari, Chino-metra,
a dozen or more sp. of Crabs, 4 of Maloturia,
Autliea, Halopoid ptypes, Shrimps (Alphans) Ophiura,
Grandactyli, etc.) by drawing up with boat-hooks
masses of coral and interlaced branches of Mad-
ropores, and carefully searching them.
25th The small streams which came down from
the Mountains here generally empty into little
Lagoons of Brackish water connected with the sea.
There I searched with seines of fine meshes,
and a variety of small fish which served
me for Specimens and also as bait for
larger kinds. Among them were Upereai,
Sargi, Mullots, Labrax?, Polpermus, and Eleo-
is.
26th to the 31st Dredging not proving as profita-
able here as at other places, but little was
done in that line and other more success.
