Sketch of Coast and Islands S.E. of Hong Kong Off by Crustacea. While thus at anchor and becalmed, we all at once observed two boats, full of men, coming toward us from the direction of San-tsoo. Our pilot and his men became very much frightened, sup- posing them to be pirates; and we got every-thing ready to give them a warm reception, but after hearing us they steered off and went toward Lochow. A light breeze now springing up, we returned to the junk and took Van Wright and Small on board. In landing we used a little flat-bottomed, low-sided skiff, with paddles. In this I made an unsuccessful hunt along the rocky shore for ducks etc. May 1854 Ning-Hang, China The wind has increased into a good breeze, and we stood out. Commencing to the Northward of Lochow, we dredged and trawled out to sea, near- ly to the Nine-pin Islands. I obtained several novelties; an Astropecten? Lebinia, several rare shells-alive, and a few amphipods and new worms. The bottom was of hard mud; depths 15-20 fathoms. After getting out to sea a considerable distance, but within the Nine- Pin Is. we got nothing in our trawl, at Capentee Rauls, but great quantities of the small fry Echinus, with which the bottom here must be entirely covered. The dredging getting thus uninteresting, and the day draw- ing to a close, we coiled down our dredge- warpes and put the boat about. In running up we boarded a large fishing-junk, which was trawling with her consort in the Bay, and obtained fish and an immense volute, alive. Seeing numerous sea-fowl on a little rock of the N. shore of Hong-Kong, we ran past it and fired away them, with what success we could not ascertain. A dredge-full taken near this rock, on a hard-bottom, gave us two new halyconoid footypes (a Forsia ? Helyoni- um) and a fine Coronula. We then landed
