36 August 20 21 After bringing these back, we took Carroll & Fred out for a shot. They got one cow. We got back about 3:30 P.M. and went to the glacier at the head of the bay for water. Thursday Aug 21-9'13. 3 W gale during the night. Joe and I were sleeping in the motor and were awakened four times and forced to get up during the night & clean our lines. We were tied up stern to with our whale boat & two of the ship's boats. It was awfully hard and chilly work coming out of a warm sleeping bay. At 5:00 A.M. a large ice berg came and failed us carrying the three inshore. We saved ourselves by getting out an anchor which was slipped when we got the engine started. Murphy, Eb & I went over to the Top of Cape Behren. It was a beautiful sunshiny day and the country easy. Point Kane Bassin seemed choked with ice. We reported unfavorably. However one lane seemed a possible way towards getting a boat at the Sth side. As a result we got under way at 4:00 P.M. and stood towards Cape Behren, towing the motor boat.
