thirty or forty or more miles of it at a
stretch night, fatiguing and cold work.
Peter started out with 12 dogs, being his
regular team of ten plus two of Pudtlak's.
One of the latter held back so much that
Peter soon cut his trace and let
him return, the other, a female, trot-
ted right along with the team and
pulled her share of the load. The
dogs traveled along at a good gait
side by side except for the two outer
dogs. These two are the most in-
telligent of the lot. They went well out-
side the others and were used in guid-
ing the team. Peter would call out
a certain word and the right leader
would crowd in against the team
turning it to the left. Another
command would similarly bring
in the left leader and turn the
team to the left, right. The whip
