One of the pleasantest occupations of winter is in feeding birds. I don't mean seed-eaters, for fear of cats. We had a myrtle warbler in the woodshed and carriage house four weeks ago, as saw 3 cats watching him at various times and they doubtless caught him, as he alighted on the floor for seeds. I took a meat-bone and tied it on a limb of an apple tree, just over our heads as we went to the green house. Soon six or eight chickadees came regularly to it. I then tied some to the Virginia creeper on the back porch and they would come right up to the window when we were there, eyeing us calmly, and four Jersey. They were as tame as chickens. Soon a white-tailed wildcat was occasionally surprised on it.
