FARLOW HERBARIUM INDEX TO THE MOSS HERBARIUM OF V.F. SCHIFFNER The bryophyte herbarium of Victor Felix Schiffner (1862-1944) was purchased from Ernst Bauer in 1931. It consisted of approximately 40,000 specimens (19,200 Hepaticae and 19,821 Musci, excluding speci- mens currently on loan). Also at FH is a set of Schiffner's Java fungi determined by von Höhnel and 150 Brazilian lichens determined by Zahlbruckner, as well as the exsiccatae Hepaticae europeae and Algae marinae. The original set of bryophytes of the Brazilian expedition is at WU; his library, manuscripts, and a residue of bryophyte speci- mens were in the possession of F. Verdoorn in 1936; types of algae are reported to be at W and BM. The moss herbarium at FH contains, besides the first set of Iter indicum, many isotypes of Carl Müller and of Brotherus, and, among others, a few of von Höhnel, Baumgartner, and Podpěra. Types and other authentic specimens are underlined in this Index if the designation appears on the label; no verifications and no search for unmarked types have been made. The collection was remounted and indexed in 1973-1974; names of taxa have been left as in the original herbarium. An index to the hepatic herbarium is also available.
