Farlow Herbarium of Harvard University Index to the Hepatic Herbarium of V. F. Schiffner The Schiffner hepatic herbarium was received, with his moss herbarium, in 1931; it has been remounted and rearranged in 1972-1973. The collection consists of over 19,200 specimens,* on over 8500 numbered sheets, arranged alphabetically by genus and alphabetically by species within each genus. Sheets with varieties and forms follow those with the typical form of the species. Specimens of large species have been arranged geographically, beginning with European specimens, then Asia, North America, South America, Africa, and others. The nomenclature and the genus and species circumscriptions remain as Schiffner left them, with one exception. The genus Jungermannia has been divided into the genera Schiffner used in his Hepaticae europeae exsiccatae, or, if the genus is not included there, to the name used in Stephani's Species hepaticarum. All original labels are preserved with the specimens. The index begins with an alphabetical listing of genera, with sheet numbers and the number of specimens. Following this is an alphabetical list of species, showing the sheet numbers at the left and the genus or genera at the right. Underlined names are followed by the designation "type", "sp nov", "orig. ex.". These designations are from the labels, or rarely from Bonner's Index hepaticarum or Stephani's Species hepaticarum. They have not been further verified, nor unmarked types been sought. The Index was prepared by Carla Neuhauser in 1973. * An exact count was impossible to make at this time, owing to outstanding loans, which will be indexed in an appendix.
