FARLOW HERBARIUM INDEX TO THE HEPATIC HERBARIUM OF W. S. SULLIVANT The bryophyte herbarium of William Starling Sullivant (1903-1873), together with his manuscripts and library, was presented by his family to the Gray Herbarium at Harvard in 1874. His other collections, including duplicates of his exsiccatae and of some additional bryophytes went to the Ohio Agri- cultural College and are now at OS. The gift to Harvard stipulated that "the collections be kept distinct and not distributed and incorporated with others." In 1899 the cryptogamic part of the Gray Herbarium was separated and added to the collections of W. G. Farlow, Professor of Cryptogamic Botany at Harvard. Lucius Underwood was hired to arrange the Sullivant hepatics on new sheets and to modernize the nomenclature. In 1973-1974 the herbarium was re- mounted and the nomenclature returned as nearly as possible to that of the original herbarium. The hepatics are the smaller part of Sullivant's bryophyte herbarium, comprising 1739 specimens. All of Sullivant's types are here, except those of the Wilkes Expedition, which was lost in the mails before Sullivant's death. He had published eight new taxa from the Wilkes collection, and as was his custom, had made drawings of the type specimens; the drawings are in the herbarium. A full set of Fendler's Venezuelan hepatics were returned to Sullivant by Gottsche, who named them. There are 61 specimens of Hooker and Thomson's Herb. Ind. or., named by Mitten, and numerous specimens, including isotypes, of Sullivant's correspondents, notably Lehmann, Montagne, Schimper, Dozy and Molkenboer, Hampe, and Austin. A Sullivant collection, kept separate and not indexed here, is a set of fragments of 84 specimens from the Schweinitz herbarium at PH, annotated by Sullivant. In the Index, only Sullivant's type specimens and a few others are under- lined, no attempt has been made to verify the other isotypes or lectotypes represented.
