Husted, Dayle N. 1964 The flocks seem to be headed mostly East or North. In one flock there was seen two Fairy Terns. A petrel (?) was seen this evening that had all dark underwings. It was about the size of a Juan Fernandez Petrel, but it flew more like a Cook's Petrel. Another of the Cook's type with all dark underwings was seen also today. Warren thought he saw a slender billed shearwater, but wasn't positive. He said somehow it looked different than aSooty Shearwater. He did not see the underwings. Many Cook's Petrels were seen sitting on the water. About 85 percent or more of the Sooty Terns are immature. October 6 --The sea was calm to moderate today, the sky was partly cloudy. Most of the birds seen today were seen in the morning and up until the middle of the afternoon. Two flocks were seen today. Most of the birds seen today were Cook's Petrels, Juan Fernandez,Petrel and Sooty Shearwaters. The Sooty Shearwater numbers dropped off this afternoon. At 1120 I saw a petrel ? that was brown on head, neck wings, back, and under tail, the breast was white. It was probably a Phoenix Island Petrel, but there is the possibility that it was a Schlegels Petrel. One Kermadec Petrel was seen today that had a light grey head. October 7--The sea was calm; it was cloudy this morning and clearing this afternoon. The birds were fewer in numbers today. Many Golden Plovers were seen. One flock of 24 circled the ship several times. The larger flocks of Plovers seen to fly higher than the smaller flocks or just one or two birds which seem to fly right over the water. This
