Husted, Dayle N. 1965 September 29--I spent most of the day out at the airport waiting for boys that didn't show up. Clapp told me I was a real bad ass and I enjoyed being one. September 30--Got things ready to go for the Cromwell today. October 1--Warren and I boarded the Cromwell at 0810. We left Pearl Harbor at 1330. We saw the ATF boys taking off. The birds were fewer this time. A Brown Booby was seen sitting in the water. A large number of Red-footed Boobies were seen near the islands in feeding flocks. Many Common Noddies were seen close to the islands also. Few Bulwer's Petrels were seen gain. The sea was fairly rough, and the sky was clear to partly cloudy. October 2--The sea was rough last night and this morning calming towards evening. The sky was clear to partly cloudy. Fewere birds were seen today. There has been no trouble so are in the changeover of names of the Dark-rumped Petrel, White-necked Petrel, Bonin Island Petrel. Two Bonin Island Petrel were seen today. This evening a Golden Plover was seen heading south. Many of the JN Petrels were seen heading south or southwest or west. The Cook's Petrels are fairly easily told by their low flight pattern. Fewere flocks were seen today (1) and it was small. A Common Nody was seen today also. October 3--The sea was calm and the sky was clear to partly cloudy with squalls this afternoon. Several more flocks were seen today. Some of them were fairly large 200+. They contained mainly Sooty Terns, JFP, and Cook's Petrels. There may have been some Common Noddies in these also, because a Common Nody was identified this afternoon. Many Golden Plovers and 1 Ruddy Turnstone was seen during the day. At 1240
