Husted, Dayle N. 1964 41 September 12--The sky was mostly clear and the sea was calm, almost flat at times. We are down in the southern end of the grid. Much more bird and other animal life was observed today. All during the day "Blackfish were observed at various times. At 1500 a Green sea turtle was seen. It was about 30+ inches in diameter. Three fishballs were picked up today that had various crustaceans growing on them. A total of 626 birds were seen. There were 15 flocks. Seventeen Harcourt's Storm Petrel were seen, six in a flock by themselves. In one of the flocks there were numerous immature Sooty Terns. Roger is still having trouble spotting birds along ways off. At 1600 a parasitic ? jaeger was spotted by Clapp and Termite in a flock (immature). It fit the discription in Peterson. It had the same overall color pattern with barred rump, small slightly pointed central tail feathers, it was definitely smaller than a Pomarine Jaeger. Light below and duskier towards the chest. Barring of the underparts was not noticeable. I think we got screwed by John's today. When I saw that we were going to have some birds I told Bobby this would be an excellent day for some shooting. Johns was standing below and behind us and he suddely did a disappearing act. Right after than, he had the boys working on the bow, which took all day, so I didn't get to collect anything. It would have been the best day for collecting so far. The other days we could have collected, it seems rather strange, Johns had someone up on the bow then too. With him in command next trip I don't know how the collecting is going to be.
