Husted, Dayle N. 1964 35 August 18--Today was spent in Hanalu Kauai Harbor. I caught up on back paper work. Then I went ashore and talked to Bobby at the hotel. He said that several Newell's had been in the hotel since we had last been there. August 19--I woke up with the slight tinges of a hangover. The crew is looking rather rough this morning. We left the harbor at 0900. In a lfock at 1010. The Sooty Terns are above, the Noddy Terns and the Hawaiian Noddies are below. Many of theNoddies are eating the bait that is being thrown over for the fish - position 22° 08' N 159° 48' W. We are in another flock at 1200. Eight Brown Boobies are sitting on the water. A Wedgetail just flew in, landed on the water, then dived under the water. The boys aren't having much luck in finding the fish. 1300 in another flock. Several Wedgetails have been observed to dive in the water just about like the Boobies - 22° 06' N 159° 52' W. During the day several Newell's and Harcourt's have been seen by the ship. Later this evening, I saw some Newell's and Harcourt's heading towards Niihau. August 20--Today was spent in Nawiliwili Harbor. I spent most of the day catching up on paper work. Tonight I listened for birds, but none were heard. August 21--In flock at 1000. Newell's Shearwater are all over the place - 22° 02' N, 160° 05' W. Newell's feeds similar to Wedgetail, but they don't arc up as high. They stay fairly close to the water. They also tend to turn on their sides more, similar to Bonin Island Petrel flight.
