Husted, Dayle N. 1964 33 the flock there were ten Bulwer's Petrels. I wouldn't have noticed them except we were in and out of them. They flew very close to the water. My observation were cut short because I had to help weigh and measure fish. Seventy-seven skipjack were caught. August 15--Today we tried for bait fish in the Keauhau Bay area, Kealakekua Bay area, and the Honaunau Bay area. No bait fish was cought in any of these areas. We headed around the southern end of the island. Later in the day, some dark rumped petrel were sighted. I had to look twice to make sure they weren't Wedgetails. I am rather surprised at how many of the boys on this ship know the birds. They don't know the specific name of all of them, but they do know the groups. August 16--We have Been in almost constant rain from 0540 to 750. I have seen two travelling blocks of Noddy Terns. We have been traveling along the southeast coast of Hawaii. More rain around 1040. We are heading towards Maui. We are in a flock at 1314. Noddy terns are landing on the water, also they are just skimming around on top of the water. Sooty Tersn are staying above the rest of the flock. When the Sooty Terns land. They clse their wing right away. The Noddy Terns do not seem to run on the water when they take off. They rise almost vertically. The Noddies that are feeding on our bait are making a chir-all-chirp sound. There is also some Hawaiian Noddy Terns in thís flock. The Noddy Terns stay close to the water, while the Sooty Terns stay up high. The fish are skipjack. The crew said the birds were fed on squid. Position of flock is 20° 12'N 155° 04W. At 1445 we were in another flock. The Noddies are acting the same way. The grey on the tail of the Hawaiian Noddy really shows up. There were at least three dark Wedgetails present.
