Husted, Dayle N. 1964 Journal June 11 Arrived by plane at 7:30 a.m. Met at airport by Mrs. Ely who took us to Hawaiian King Motel. Met Warren King and Bob Fleet. June 12--We monkeyed around during the day and went to one of the offshore islands at night (PopuTuela or something like that). We paddled out in a life raft and left the mainland about 4 hawaiian time. Arrived at island about 30 minutes later. We looked at Wedge-tailed Shearwaters and Bulwer's Petrels. That night we banded some of each (25 of each I believe). We had to call the petrels out which was much fun, so I decided I would try to call a Wedge-tail out, after a short bit of squawking back and forth the bird came out and about took my nose off. We paddled back to the mainland and were home by 11:30. June 13--We picked up Mike Ord in the morning and tried to get a boat. We finally got one in the afternoon and went to Rabbit Island and looked around. Mike invited us to come out the following day with the Audubon Society. After coming back we had chow with C. A. Ely and talked and talked over the affair. June 14--Dr. Ely, Cameron Kepler, Warren King, and myself left at 8:30 Hawaiian time to band birds (Sooty Tern chicks) on Rabbit Island. Dr. Ely left about noon and we stayed on until about 4:30 banding. We banded about 1900 birds. The water was smooth. We got back about 6. June 15--Paid my part of the motel bill which was $2983. We boarded the Townsend Cromwell at 0800. We were squared away and left by 0815. We went to sea and set the compasses by making circles off Oahu. We pulled into Pearl Harbor to the sub pens for fuel. We pulled out of Pearl Harbor by 1500. On the way out I saw a Brown Booby sitting on a buoy.
