Madison Fork Ranch (Forkhole) June 24, 1979 After breakfast we drove to the Forkhole River, arriving at the "low bridge" about 10:15. Yesterday there was reported to have been a big hatch here 10 to 1 M. Today there was virtually nothing -- the old mayfly but not enough to induce a general rise in the trout.. he caught nothing at all. Red-winged blackbirds were feeding hell out of a pair of ravens. Every time a raven would fly, the blackbirds would dig in its back (one all three!) and peck hell out of it; forcing the raven to the ground. Drove to the lower Gilton where we walked down from the road and enjoyed a picnic in privacy. Within the park we saw trumpeter swans on lower Madison, elk in both places along Madison & Forkhole, quite a herd of deer on big flats of middle Forkhole. Drove up to Gilton Meadow for a look around and saw quite a group of elk (14 or more) mostly bulls, the antlers about half grown. Home by 3 PM for a long nap. After dinner we returned to the Ford. Much like a rise tonight but Carl hooked and landed a 15" brown which he kept for breakfast. The Canada geese were bothered by our fishing, and paraded across the pond to avoid us, Daddy-D first, six goslings in an evenly spaced line following him, mommy bringing up the rear. Heard sandhill crane at a great distance.
