Rock Pails, Quintana Roo
Jan 6, 1979
Last night we flew into Cancun from San Francisco,
arriving about 9:30PM. We contracted a mini-bus to take us
to Boca Paila about 3 hours to the south. The bus ran out of
gas so we were a mile late arriving.
This morning a wild east wind was blowing but we went
fishing anyway. Worry at Beach had a boat ad boatman—
Gregorio (male) at Jorge (lady's). We fished with Glee and
both caught four fish before lunch, all small (I had 2 jennet
ad 2 snappers, Worry a barracuda ad three snappers). We cast
in quite shallow water adjoining the mangroves. Saw some
big barracuda slashing hell out of small mullet. I had
one run from a good fish (jennet?) but missed him.
After lunch both at camp, as a nice rep, we set out—
again at 3PM, wind still blowing fiercely. In a sheltered
deep hole in the mangrove I hooked three longfish ad landed
two of them. The third straightened the hook. They were all
about 3 to 4 lbs., which according to Gregorio is about
average. On a windy day like this, Gregorio tells me the
bonefish stay deep and do not go out fishing about on the
flats. Hence my first sinking "net belly" line was functional
whereas Worry with a regular "sinking tip" did not connect
with a fish after lunch.
We saw brown pelicans, spoonbills, Worry ibis, Green egrets,
an assortment of gulls, terns, ad little birds,
