Nov 14 Makin Atoll Gilbert Is.
I went out to the shorebird flats tonight
to try and band but the moon was
too bright so I sat down out in the
middle of the flats to wait for
a cloud to come over the moon.
As soon as I turned off my light
and sat down scores of shore birds
started walking towards me.
before 15 minutes had about 150
wandering tattlers walking around
me (all just out of net range [about 75])
I didn't see very many of them sleeping
they kept moving around. I didn't
see them feeding but they must have
been because the tide was coming
in and the birds were all grouped
around the water runs that were
forming. They kept walking up and
down the edge of these runs. I finally
had to leave because I was slowly being
buried in water and the birds were following
the water's edge which was getting farther
away from me and closer to shore.
