Hibberd 1966 Journal 28 Dec. Miday Atoll Sand Is. Arrived at about 2pm (Hosteltown) and went about the usual miscellaneous chicken. Jwent around and played with the alligators. It seems as if the average is 3 incubated for most of the area, about say 40% gone, 3% are still laying. No chicks at all. Don't know too much about the Blackfots or D'ur for baby, I've seen all being about 5 world old also. Another huge field across from the Terminal as I must to the force of the full area across from the BOQ. Spent much time looking for WTS + RTTB but none to be seen. One small FT chick seen but no other evidence of nesting. FT Poplatin say down with only 20 a so seeing during the day but none came into roost at night. The trees around the BOQ have 4 robbings on egg about 39 well incubated and the rest appear to be nearly so, no chicks. Probably about 40 nests. Another three acres street of Chiefs club show about 15 nests with about 27 eggs, hand mouths and 3 large nestlings. Many other H.N nesting around Jelen in groups. Many roosting. Checked about 50 Borin Island B and all but one had brood patch covered over. The one that didn't had its BP & unfeathered. Fresh plumeage, I took as if they are getting ready to breed. Saw one Painted in the new nest to the BOQ. On Palaf about 30 ruddies, 8 Plan scattered singly. 29 Dec. Miday Phil Sand Is. Saw the ninth Painted again on the opposite side of the BOQ, + 4 more almost at the same time, out in the lagoon. Golden plovers and ruddies common. Found about 30 more BFA nests. On average nests of BFA seem to be 3/4 - 7/2 incubated this week on the SW shore along runway. 30 Dec. Kure Atoll. Flew over to Kure about 10:30 pm. we circled almost wave top level over the whole neck of reef and over seal island. Counted 6-2 seals on the mainland and 12 on Kure. Also saw an adult porty tern over the Kure lagoon. Went out at about 3pm and walked around Island. Hibberd 1966/67 Journal 30 Dec. Pure Counted 4 underings, about 9 ruddies & about 4 BFA plovers. Saw one nearly shore bird and attempted to collect it but the bird was out of range when I shot. The interesting thing about this is tonight I went out at about 10 pm to check incubation stages of the alligators by cardlaming. Well I found my slot & sand piper next to the egg in a BFA nest, nest under the BFA also. Off I still peek, it was definitely slot and dead. Weird luck. Only from the shot holes the sand had a large bruise on its side. So I guess the sandy had walked too close to the BF and in its slot condition did not escape in time the BF. Then maybe after a turn the BF then used the dead bird for nest material. Possible? Who knows who got the bird now. Lewis saw a large gull over antenna field and one of the Coast Guard men here reports a Cormorant. Nothing seems to be nesting except the alligators. Borin & Islands small over but no nests. I counted 67 rad RFB + 5im for the Radar reflector in the evening. Lewis counted 83F 75rd RFB 85,6B 80 RFB from the other towers. 3 Jan Kure Atoll Green Is. A seal had a pup on the very tip of north point tonight. When I arrived about the pups was dead. The pup still had mother's body + umbilical cord still attached and the (so) 3, oh well I hate to say this but mother was still flashy so must have arrived minutes too late. The tide was coming up and the higher waves were washing around the pups may have drowned during birth or maybe it was just simply from food. There was a total BFB on the point also it had her all over it belly, right leg and wing. BF All are an 3/4 incubated eggs + layson or 5 incubated eggs. H Jan Kure heard a BT Culum toot while eating lunch in the mess. Also heard couple of RTTB cooing.
