Arrived 1330 midday time. Contacted 000
then got a room at the BOA. This is Saturday and
can't get security clearance to go to eastern till the
office opens on Monday. Two sooty lordings nights
shot. Thousands of Honiwa weddies and fairy
terms in the casuarina trees. Honiwa weddies
have completed nesting cycle & many immatures
are flying around. Fairy terms are about midway in
nesting cycle with mostly medium chicks.
Saw the feathers and skeleton to Bonin island
petrel. Woolpools are at extreme beginning of
cycle with digging and few fresh eggs. They aren't
too common but can be found in just about any
thickly vegetated area away from houses. Planning
to kite tomorrow. Have to go to SAR, seat to
get boarding pass. This is quite a fantastic island.
The birds mingle in with the people. Perfect
compatibility. The fairy terms here are still
friendly with people, in the southern islands
the islands with sloff fairy terms and specks the
fairy terms won't come near anybody. There's
birds everywhere here on lawns and in window
sills. Cats aren't allowed here and only small
dogs. There was quite a grand storm the other
day. It blew all the fairy chicks out of the trees.
Because of the lack of predation by dogs and
cats I thought I'd pull a cool one and
band the chicks. I found out later that
probably most of those chicks are dead now.
Rats! Literally, rats, they run right
