This lack of enthusiasm is not helping the persons
aim at these birds either. Now if the
if the emphasis was put on just getting the
birds instead of shooting them I think
the enthusiasm of the personnel would
rise and with it the number of birds gotten.
They there are many ways of getting birds
at sea without shooting them. Chumming
and or looking and netting for petrels, prats,
shearwaters and albatross. Netting
for sooties (which at the height of the season
could amount to 60 to a landbird a day)
and the proper use of lights at night
for tropic birds and anything else.
These live birds could not only be
used by checking for leg bands but
could be banded, blood sampled,
parasitized, checked for molt, hood
patch and anything else and
released again in hopes of being
picked up on other islands.
This way we could have both
quantity and quality instead of
just quantity alone as in the past.
Also as it is right now it is up
to the leader of the groups to explain
to the Captain how important it is to collect birds
at sea and this does not have enough
