They there are many ways of getting birds at sea without shooting them. Chumming and or looking and netting for petrels, prats, shearwaters and albatross. Netting for sooties (which at the height of the season could amount to 60 to a landbird a day) and the proper use of lights at night for tropic birds and anything else. These live birds could not only be used by checking for leg bands but could be banded, blood sampled, parasitized, checked for molt, hood patch and anything else and released again in hopes of being picked up on other islands. This way we could have both quantity and quality instead of just quantity alone as in the past.
