Maly 1960 Liptonychotes weddelli Oct 29 Scott Base, McMurdo. 7 & seals with calves on ice along sea side of pressure ridge near Scott Base. Each & with one pup. Several born within a few hours I would say as their umbilici were fresh & the placenta also looked fresh. Near each & was an impression in the snow melted in 8 to 10 mile deep of the seal. They apparently had lain there for several day without moving before giving birth. Spots of mire in depression indicated that they had not even moved or moved slightly for this function. The seals were aware of our presence but most put up with it. One came yowards me but stopped 10 feet off. One flid moving with flippers held against side & tail off these exactly in the manner of a giant inch worm. Oct. 31 Saw one Weddell seal in evening on ice 1/4 mile offshore from camp.
