Catharacta macacornicula. Jan 18 Modoc died suddenly today. He showed the same symptoms showed by Gretchen earlier, but while she urinated alone he died quickly. He was apparently healthy in the morning & had the run of the lab for an hour or 2. Don took a picture of him on the cage in the afternoon. At 5:30 I noticed he was panting, gasping would be more accurate & he showed no depression to stand. When prodded he raised himself part way but with difficulty. They most resembled the cooke canned tomatoes & weaker in consistency after several days soaking. He was dead by 7:30. Gretchen by contrast seems in good shape she is alert, vocal (very!) and has a good appetite. She still can do nothing with her leg however. Jan 20 Addendum. His bones were weak & brittle & the body seemed dehydrated. Present opinion is he died of a Ca deficiency. This was strengthened
