Catharacta maccormicki clove in + grabbed the chick of this pair. A few- a few feet when it was hit + knocked by one of the parents who preceded to "beat the shit out of it" according to Pete, + it was driven off. This chick is crippled; its right leg projects out at a right angle + cannot be brought under. It has been this way from birth; but I didn't realize it until yesterday when Jack Cunningham pointed it out. Jan 6 Ten shena eggs have been brought in from the field unembalthed + blown so far. of them 3 showed signs of having been fertile. One with a small embryo well rolled + 2 with large near term embryos. The latter were not blown but were given to Don Douglas. Jan 8 Observed a shena attempting to kill a penguin chick. When first seen the shena had the chick 8 feet from a colony, penguin chick by the head - the chick broke loose + ran towards the colony, the shena flying grabbing it again by neck + their at down with a twist of its own neck the chick then 4 feet from colony again got up + made it to safety.
