Mahey 1960 91 Olattharacta maccarmacki Jan 2 I cant be sure that the vitamin affected a cure. Don Douglas says that some chicks last year (of a used in bio-lab) also lost the ability to walk for a day or 2 but regained it shortly. Both chicks were given 1/4 vitamin pill on 29+ again on Jan 1. Additional notes on food shortage for shrews. Carcasses of penguin chicks in penguinery are eaten almost entirely down to hind limb, pelvis, flippers & some skin occasionally the head & beak is left. I have the impression that more food is becoming available only in the last 2-3 day This coincides with the growing creche tendency in penguin chicks thus allowing the shrews to get at carcasses. Shrews denied them. Last week P. Martin reported shrews attacking large healthy penguin chicks & dragging them away from colony. They were however unable to kill them & the chicks got back to the colony. I believe he saw this more than once. Jan 3 Pete Martin reported the following observation. At nest 332 near which he is expecting an antenna. A strange adult shrew came sweeping along
