JOURNAL Oct 31 (cont.) 7.30 A.M.-a beautiful clear day. Temperature was a few degrees above zero with a breeze blowing. George Toney the USARP representative met us and whisked us off in baggage to the base several miles off. We traveled in a snow cat. VIPs were flown over in helicopters. McMurdo is hectic - the only word for it. There were reputed to be 400+ men in it before the last batch of planes started flying. It is built on a hillside above McMurdo Sound, actually on an island, Ross Island. Met Ardo Meyers in my Barrack. Last saw him in June at Barrow. Curly Wohlschlag is here - he is in charge of the Bio Lab here. Had a good chat with him to get some items of equipment. In afternoon walked over to Scott Base - the New Zealand base located 2 miles away - with Ardo Meyers. Chatted with some of the men. Saw my first Seals, also Weddell seals with pups. Photos of base & of Mt. Erebus, + Weddell Seals.
