Hobey 1960 Journal Oct. 31 (Cont.) Canton was completely lack. Soil appeared sandy with much crushed coral about the base. No trees seen except 2, one on either side of the entrance to the Terminal building, coconut palms. Ate a meal at the mess hall, $2.50, chicken rice. Spent about an hour. Flight to here about 9-10 hours. Fiji, four to 5 hours from Canton. A large commercial airport. Terminal building so new & modern. Fijians in white shorts & skirts served no coffee in the lounge, at 15ยข per cup. I walked about outside. The sky was clean & dark. I haven't seen a sky so black & so transparent so that it gave an illusion of depth, in years. The flight to Christchurch from these lands about 8 hours. It became light about halfway there. We hit N.Z. on the N.E. coast of north island. Views of the island were fragmentary because of a partial cloud cover. Saw more of South Island. A high beautiful perfect
