Catharacta maccormickii Oct 31 (cont.) the very brief and not seen in detail. Much ground announcement with varied wing display. Call associated with it is very nasal compared to pomarine. Must get a good description of this. Nov. 1 Arrived at skuaery at 9.15 A.M. within 50 yds of me there are 8 sitting or standing, 2 are associated as pairs the rest are isolated. Strange skua flew over, 1 single + pr gave Challenge. Stand up wings swept up + back heads raised + mouth opened wide. Call. very nasal: i i i i i i typically on same pitch, falling at end. tone reminds me very much of the red compressor at home. The call can rise + fall in pitch as delivered, can be uttered only 2 or 3 times, or continuously for many seconds. Has a wheezy or aspirant quality, particularly at the beginning of each syllable. Chase. Have seen 2 of these since I've been here. Two birds flying fast one closely pursuing the other, slips close perpendicular movement avoids both so fast this no swoop or pass possible - on second chase both flew out
