Oct.29 Scott Base, McMurdo Sound.
Saw 3 skuas at 2:30 PM. Flew
along coast landed 100 yd from dogs
near base. One more came by & joined
them an hour later. Later while observing
seals 1/4 mile away saw 5 skuas. I
presumed the was the same group +
one.
Keith Wise and another entomologist
saw one skua on 3 different occasions
on Oct 28 at Cape Crozier. This first
one of year in McMurdo area.
Oct.31 Hallett.
Spent 2 1/3 hours in blaney.
Skuas sitting about in pairs. Quiet.
Twice saw pair take wing & fly off into
& perhaps across the Pengunery. Saw
one bird return & regurgitate food for
its mate. No ritualized ceremony.
The both appeared to briefly choke in
a pose with neck arched up
