Male 1960 Catheracta maccormicki Oct 31 Note from fabrit Thompson, New Zealand station chief at Hallett. Oct 13 - 3 skuas, first sighting. Oct 24 - 8 skuas Oct 27 - 11 skuas. (end Thompson) Oct.29 Scott Base, McMurdo Sound. Saw 3 skuas at 2:30 PM. Flew along coast landed 100 yd from dogs near base. One more came by & joined them an hour later. Later while observing seals 1/4 mile away saw 5 skuas. I presumed the was the same group + one. Keith Wise and another entomologist saw one skua on 3 different occasions on Oct 28 at Cape Crozier. This first one of year in McMurdo area. Oct.31 Hallett. Spent 2 1/3 hours in blaney. Skuas sitting about in pairs. Quiet. Twice saw pair take wing & fly off into & perhaps across the Pengunery. Saw one bird return & regurgitate food for its mate. No ritualized ceremony. The both appeared to briefly choke in a pose with neck arched up
