Pygmaelio adelie Feb 8 Penguin population has continued to decline very rapidly these past two days. Number now remaining perhaps 10% of original those seen in colony are mostly chicks. Very few carcasses are seen about, I saw 2 or walk thru colony to point of haul & 1 on return. Feb 11 Pop. continues to decline 20-3000 birds a generous estimate of population today. Chicks continue movement to shore + out on to ice & hence away. Reports of a Leopard Seal along N. shore in early afternoon. While watching penguins along N. shore noted another sick chick. Blood in water & didn't move so waves washed around it was swept out into sea one but struggled back - disappeared shortly after. Carcass of young seen in water at same spot, partly eaten. This is third sick chick seen. Two have been brought in by camp personnel. Symptoms have been, sticky mucous around eyes & mouth, "bubbly" breathing, listlessness. Inside the liver seemed spongier than normal + heart lighter in color with areas 1/8-3/16" thick, in heart muscle very light in color giving sections a mottled appearance. Storm & rain
