May 1961 Journal The camp was pretty quiet most of the next day. Feb 6 Cape Hallett, Antarctica. Sunny but windy day. Wind of 15 to 20 knots blowing. Make a round of the outta penguins during the day. Put up two Wilson's petrels shot by Don Douglas. That's about it. Feb 8 Cape Hallett, Antarctica. Don't know where the past days two are gone. I shot members of several pairs I watched earlier in the season. This was done on afternoon of the 7. Spent part of evening + this morning skinning + salting the skins. Make a round + weighed penned chicks in afternoon. Brought in + killed chick (02 at nest 307). This chick has been crippled for a week now, inable to stand or walk. Feb 9 Cape Hallett, Antarctica Beautiful still clear day. The number of penguins continues its precipitous decline. The number of skuas also seems to be declining; more are seen out over the ice in Port Moulton Bay. I took movie of skuas feeding on a penguin carcass (which I supplied) + also waited on north shore hoping to get shot of perceiving
