Maler 1961 Journal Jan 17 Cape Hallett, Antarctica The day really spent doing little. Wind was blowing in morning the velocity had dropped & It gradually died out during the day. The only real accomplishment of the day was finishing up the egg I had Collected. Blew all remaining, packed all in cotton & sealed them in a small box. A complete round of the slavery war made in the afternoon & all chicks were weighed, those in the penguinery before lunch. In the evening Modoc died; his death "shocked" the camp & full military honors were prescribed but not actually carried out. Jan 19 Cape Hallett, Antarctica. Snow was falling heavily when I got up this morning. Small pellet-like flakes that were coming straight down. It had been falling for some time so there was an inch or so on the ground when I stepped out. I put up Modoc in the morning & 2 other chicks I had had frozen in the evening
