Maker 1960 Journal 12, and after lunch I make a round of the meat in the penguinery. Put up 4 penguin chicks before supper. After supper (in addition to going to the show) I wrote up my daily notes. Again froze an overcast day with a few snow flurries. Towards late afternoon the wind began to pick up & in the evening was blowing briskly, not yet a full gale but a heavy wind of 20 mph in gusts perhaps up to 40. Dec. 24 Cape Hallett, Antarctica. The wind continued to increase in force & was blowing a minor gale on this day. I only resolved not to make a round because of the blustery weather & because of the approaching holiday. I did write my notes & yet still tried to manage to keep busy indoors. We had moved the entire place over to the quarters for a Christmas Eve party. Donald & Colin spent a good part of the day decorating the place and also making candles for Christmas. The latter became something of a major indoor activity & mixed melting down white candles, coloring the wax with black printer ink & casting the new candle. All of the 23 & part of the 24 was spent in this activity
