19 Spent the day shopping & motoring about Calcutta. 20 MacDonald took me up country in his Brickbar for a few days Insurance work. We got away at 12 o'clock but made slow progress getting out of Calcutta amid the bullock carts, The first 30 miles the road ran then narrow lanes with trees shut or either side + goats, dogs + children in the streets wherever villages could be seen. At 5 P.M. we reached Burdwan station & threw tiffin in the Stationhouse. The road up this point extends then the rice fields bordered by banyans + other trees + field of jute or hemp were often passed amidst the light green of the new rice. The village people were also
