"were very affectionate to
the keeper took them some
of them out of the cage which
clinged to him affectionately,
One case of large brown Sanguers
or sacred Apes were stealing
in size + very friendly.
No African animal except
Zebras + Lions were seen
in the gardens. The Keeper
with Reptile house went into
the Snake pens + stirred up
the Cobras for us which lay
camouflaged beneath piles of
dry grass, When aroused
being lifted up by the middle
of the body they stood erect
with spread hood + struck
at him. They observed
narrowly showed no fangs
when the mouth was open,
th fangs having been extracted,
doubtless + this accounted for
the Keepers fearlessness!"
