At dark we reached Meng-peng village of some size. It is rather large plaining rice terraces. The hillsides here are all without forest and are now grass covered, the grass recently burnt. It appears to be a poor game country, also unsuitable for small verminals. Weves seen & often heard chilling. (17) The road after leaving Meng-peng passed up the valley & over a high ridge to the next down into the Salween gorge. The road here ran on the ridge and between weathered glacial stone & brown grass covered fields of wheat. Theroad was from or blackish soil red soil, and in many were alders & few oaks.
