Our camp was situated in a grove
of tall slender pines on a small
promontory above the creek, which
the road follows after leaving the Mekong
River. We are here some 4 thousand
from the river & on feet in altitude,
I caught a very fulvous spiny rat
somewhat like the Ethiopian species.
Also 4 Micromys, 6 Apodemus of
small size, 3 Sorax (short tailed) 1 Sorco
( long tailed ) A caught a silver Vole & small
Apodemus + Sorax. It went out
hunting down the creek & returned
with a goral which he found in
company with 3 others high up on a
steep precipice of rocks, but goral are
also said to occur here for no monkey
or other game. The day was clear & my
wife's stomach contained herbs + leaves only. In
the afternoon I found a painted jeron
+ a chameleon in the tropics. The Goral
shook several days ago and had its
hair bone, products in its stomach,
apparently vegetation.
