The night was clear & frosty. On our way down the canyon in the morning, we saw many rock yews, large oak ferns & much moss & straggle on both sides. The monkeys however were not in evidence. They are said to wander about much & only come near the village when the nectarine is ripe. The road soon crossed a stream that high above the rock follows a water ditch. We walked a good piece north two feet above the Melung which could be seen far below flowing calmly, fields planted on both sides of the Melung's banks, 13,000 feet down there in the mountains, are near them. The people all crowd in small villages on the banks of the river. We made camp on the Melung near the village of Chunung - in at 6 pm Fall. For supper we had a duck & a goose roasted & stuffed with chestnuts. Yesterday we had only the blue cranes roasted & stuffed. The meat was very fine flavored & juicy, excelling duck or goose in flavor.
