lies a few miles from the great City which is situated on an island in the river & connected by stone bridges. The city is surrounded by a wall & my believed only thr thr or 3 gates which were most recently closed at dark daily. Then the whole country the tendency is for the people to live in villages. No isolated houses are seen on the rice fields. (8) One of the travelers brought along a red wolf & some mule to sell which was collected 25 miles up the Mair River near some at a place called Shoom. Con tinued passing outfit & specimens. An Englishman in the native customs department Carey gave no much information about your man & the animal to be obtained there. (9) Our luggage consisted of 40 trunks & sacks which we put on board a house boat & sailed down the river at sundown We reached Pagoda Island
