The nearest Chinese character to Helen is
Helen, by which they know me; though,
no doubt myself as well in Chinese
cannot easily be written
but in Chinese but another
name a translation numbered instead.
The missionaries
use Chinese by writing it
phonetically in English and
this way it is greatly simplif[ed]
+ many thousand characters yet
elem[nated]. All the names of all
the rivers from Hoochow
down to monthly river are
rice or sweet potatoes and
tea. Tea is grown only at
Yenping above.
The rainiest months are from
december 70th to July 12th when
it often rains daily for long
spells or low weeks running.
From July to December it
is drier but the midsummer
is very hot. The finest months
are October to December
when it is dry and cool. During
our trip in July it rained very
little + the rice fields were very
dry & suffered much.
