"Hing ganes near Heng Hlong. At this town we stopped for lunch. An old friend of Caldwell, a riflehunter, said there were reports of ferocious animals in the mountain near by. Near the city is a monstrous rocky built a rendezvous for civets and small cats. The monastery is situated up and a couple miles in the mountains in a small narrow valley, amid forest. A fine stream of white water is piped to the monastery in bamboo pipes. There are come or Chinese priests here who are very friendly. They gave us the whole upper story building for camp in. During the evening and again at dawn they beat drums on the temple and went from ministerites to drive away evil spirits. Our road led across the Henglong river over stone bridges of granite. Small temples of peculiar architecture were to be seen in the fields bordering the road about Heng Hlong.
