At daybreak we passed through the narrow straits of Shimoroseki into the land out of the Inland Sea of Japan, weather misty, but sea smooth. Just after lunch we had a heavy thunder shower in which the rear smoke stack was struck by great patches several feet square of paint stripped off the near side. Reached Nagasaki at 5 P.M., & moved slowly up the long narrow entrance. The bay is beautifully hilly & wooded with islets at the entrance. There is little sign of habitation until you get well into the bay for Nagasaki itself.
