Japan.
No cattle, sheep or goats to
consume grass on hillside
or forests, No pigs seen,
very few chickens.
Fruit poor in quality;
cherries only one sort, white &
green somewhat. No fruit or paste
fruits anticipated, trees
Peaches,
No berries except strawberries.
No farm machinery for
harvesting or planting
rice. Threshing done by hand
with flails.
No protection for bird or animal
life.
Only one butcher shop seen
in Kyoto; only a few
places where pork was
sold. Japanese do
not eat meat. Vegetable
market chiefly egg plants,
onions, potatoes, carrots etc.
No sea birds or landbirds
only crow able to survive
