the Chinese have exterminated
rodents in all the rice country.
One of the natives said rabbits
were common near the village
does + flying squirrels in the
hills. We departed at
7 AM weather cloudy.
On way passed over a spine
Chalbell ridge. Chestnuts
+ oaks were seen on the way,
filmmers abundant, snap-
dragons, Maloons, Clematis,
Purple Passmordens, Potentilla
do wild Sweet pea etc.
Stopped at noon an hour at
a small village for lunch. The
road north of the way follows
a large bright red river, a tributary
of the Yangtze. The valley
follows the river inside + planted to
rice. We reached Ch'iu Tsiang
which is a large walled city on
the river at 4:30. We took
short cut road to the town via
crossing a single plank bridge
my horse fell off onto the middle
pulling thing there on his belly &
