Reached Kiang station 2 P.M. The valley is a large level one filled by ripening rice fields, + bounded by low hills. The city sits a hill a little distance off surrounded by high wall + pagodas in the center. Altitude here 5300 feet. Sun hot at noon + reflection bothersome but heat dry. In places I saw fields of tobacco + rocks of drying leaves near some of the homes. Many cockcomb plant was seen in blossom in field, evi- dently a crop of some sort.
Small flowers also form one patch crops here. Pine trees planted in rows on the hills in some places. This val-
ley is the granary of Yunnan. Fields of cotton + black wools seen in fields; the hill sides were running grains, founded by a guy shot last only look of large age + altitude like Torchan grows which are definite cement stains.
