Night cloudy & humid, We spent an hour at the station arranging our 62 pieces of luggage for transport. The director of the railway who is very friendly & speaks English at times gave us permission to carry the luggage in a 4th class car. He also furnished a general letter of introduction to call to help on the railroad line. 30 Departed from Hanoi at 6:15 A.M. train. On the station of Vichy on the Chao River we left the level rice fields after Delta & climbed up thru rolling spurs. The soil was a red clay. Many fields of canna grass
