Transcription
The language is almost identical to that of Swatow. The language spoken at Hainan according to these women is very different from Cantonese which is not understood at Hainan altho it is under the same provincial government. The islands is mountainous but the people are peaceful, tigers, & the king cobra & pythons occur almost large black ape. The sea cows run abound & the land shell's are carved very expertly by the native into ornaments. The weather continued foggy raining all day it was cool & pleasant. The distance from Hong Kong to Hainan or Haidan is 150 miles & requires about 36 hours by this steamer. The anchorage is about 3 miles off shore and in the shallow channel. The occurrence of tigers is not mention ed in either the Pinkbook or Allee's account of the mammals. The island is 153 miles sq. by 78 miles. The highest mountains are 6,000 feet high, but the interior is little known.
