Spent the day on the boat
correcting Persian MS. The
trip down was rather disag-
reeable at night owing to the
rolling of the boat. A ty was
seaside owing to bad physical
condition generally, but away
from army at 4 P.M.
12 Reached Siatow at mid-night. Sea rolling gave the
vessel much motion which
disturbed our sleep. We all
went ashore at 7 O'clock
breakfast at the Astor Hotel.
Afterward we went shopping
for drum work & embroidery
for which Siatow is noted!
The best linen is made in
Canton but the work of embrod-
& drum work is superior
at Siatow. The best place
now is a Chinese house where
several Chinese women do
embroidery, etc. to order. They
understand English but don't
speak it so business is difficult
with them. Another place was
owned by a Malay woman, Mrs. [illegible].
