He claims the plane caught in the storm the helicopter that dawn and had to spend the night on North Island inside the helicopter. They had started toward Midway but were forced back by strong head winds. A plane had to fly them from Midway the next morning to drop fuel + oil for the choppers so they could make the return trip in the helicopters. This morning I saw an orange stemmed frigate at close range flying up from an area in which a number of nest were located. I waited around the area but the bird did not return. It was impossible to determine if this bird was just loafing or copying of the breeding birds or whether it was actually breeding on Southeast Is. Left the island to return to the ship at 2:30 pm. along with John and the major portion of our gear. Steve Crane + Dick remained behind to spray the mustardweed in hopes of eradicating it. As soon as I got on the ship I unballed my tackle bag into the truck & tried to pack all of my gear, before Steve returned with his boat. When Steve returned he saw an adult Ring-billed Gull + yelled for me to bring the shotgun. I was down in the forward fold packing my second tackle full of gear + no one seemed to know who I who - got that it made any difference since the shotgun + ammo were both stored down in the bottom of the first tackle that had been packed. At 6 pm, the ship pulled anchor + steamed toward Midway Island.
